If It’s Not Windows Then It Must Be Fanaticism

Story: Not every iPhone is equal
I can absolutely asure you that I don’t use or recommend Apple products because of any hero worship aimed at Mr. Jobs. I use and recommend them simply because they’re less expensive to operate and support, and at least as reliable as boxes running Windows, or anything else available to the general public for that matter. When uncle Steve came back on the scene during the last half of the last decade I was actually rather leery that Apple’s excellent products would once again be hindered by his fanatical lack of mainstream marketing ability, but thankfuly my fears have been somewhat diminished since 2000 or so. It’s clear to me that Stevo has a clear vision for Apple computer that non of his predecessors had, but it’s not like no one else could possibly do what he’s done. It really does take being able to think out of the box to run a computer company that comprises a tiny fraction of the market place as compared to your primary competitor. I’m sure Sir Steve is a fine person, but it’s his products that I’m after. Don’t assume that just ’cause you have one or two Mac using friends that are gaga over Steve that that means all Mac users are, ’cause we’re not – all.

I don’t know any Windows users that worship Gates the way Apple users seem to worship Jobs and his half-formed PR-speak.
I also don’t limit myself to using Windows; my work PC dual boots XP and Ubuntu, I own a Creative Zen MP3 player, and I plan to buy an iMac. Isn’t there something to be said for diversity as well? I guess I should say that I do what works for me in every situation, and I hope everybody else does the same.
I guess for comparison, if I felt, towards Microsoft, as most Mac users seem to feel towards Apple, I’d own a Zune, a copy of Vista Ultimate, and I’d be saving up for a table computer I’d also refuse to spell Steve Jobs or Apple’s full names or consider purchasing one of their products, but not before scolding anybody who would want to use one. (Anybody see anything wrong with that?)

Not every iPhone is equal
Posted by Kevin Ho
As per usual, the weekend rolled around and we headed up to Stinson Beach armed with our iPhones. In between catching rays and laying out my friends I wanted to check out the new features from Meebo and Facebook for the iPhone. Strangely, the EDGE network was very either/or–it was on…or completely off. Spotty coverage with the EDGE network? Surely not.
In another comparison, my friend Max and I were waiting for a table at a popular crepe place in San Francisco’s Mission District and were surfing the net via our iPhones. Yet, we noticed that while my iPhone had 5 bars of service from AT&T, Max’s had one, then none, then one.
Not sure why, but I’m sure it has to do with towers, transmission rates, data compression…But you would think that two identical iPhones bought from the same store, at the same time, would be alike. Think again, I guess.
